BRICS PLUS expansion 2023-2024

As of July 3, 2023, the BRICS Plus alliance includes ten countries. In addition to the original five BRICS states—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—the following five countries have joined: Iran, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Ethiopia1. Together, these ten emerging economies represent approximately 45.78% of the world’s population and generate around 28.33% of global gross domestic product (GDP). China and India, as the most populous countries, significantly contribute to this alliance.

In July 2024, the BRICS group announced plans to expand its membership by formally accepting six new members: Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
